Flying Wrapping Paper [Photo]
The wrapping paper flies as presents are revealed X-mas morning.
Back Story
As part of Week 03 of my 52 to Two project this week, I set to capture images of our son opening presents on his first X-mas morning. Well, technically he was 3 weeks old last year at X-mas, but you get the point.
The hope was to shoot with natural light because our tree was setup right next to the balcony doors. However, with the room facing south, we didn’t receive enough light at 10am to get the images I wanted. So it was time to close the blinds and bounce the flash.
You can find the chosen shots for this week in the 52 to Two image galley, and see the rest of the shoot over at the X-mas Morning photoset on Flickr.

New Photography Goodies
In addition to our son expanding his stockpile of toys, I also scored a few photography related gifts on Sunday that will certainly come in handy with this project and my other work in the new year:
The ColorChecker Passport has been on my radar for while, after watching Episode 209 of Digital Photography on AdoramaTV. I’ve had a few cases where my subject was wearing his traditional red Blackhawks gear on game night, and the reds were just throwing me off in post. Using something like the passport, I hope to drastically improve how those colors fit into the rest of my images.
The FlashBender just seemed pretty neat after reading a few reviews on it, and it should also fit well into this weekly project of mine. Having a reliable way to bounce flash in many different rooms, settings, or even outdoors feels like a strategic advantage too good not to try. We’ll see how it goes as I factor it into my shoots.
Your Gifts?
Did you get any neat photography gifts this season? Do share…

Mama Kisses [Photos]
A little peck on the cheek from Mama and Christian is all smiles.
Back Story
These photos were actually “forgotten” until recently when I was going through photos from our Door County trip in June. Once I saw them, I knew I wanted to share them. Taken only one week after the Naperville Riverwalk portraits on his six month birthday, so it’s amazing to see how he looks now compared to back then.

Door County Prints
Remember I said I rediscovered these when going through photos from past Door County trips? Well, those are being edited and added to the Door County print gallery over at my online print store.

Take a look around if you visited “The Door” before or even if you haven’t and wanted to see what it’s like through my lens. And check back often – more images are being posted throughout the week.

Autumn Sister Bay [Photo]
Sister Bay, WI on a cloudy autumn afternoon in between rain showers.
Back Story
This photo is actually a remake from a series of shots I took in Door County back in October, 2009. It was a raining just about the entire weekend, but I did manage to get a few shots in between showers.
Order Prints
This has been one of my favorite images in my Door County portfolio, so why did I decide to remake it? Well, here’s the original version that I published in 2009:
Sister Bay – Original Version
Your Take?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so what do you think? The original – more monochromatic version – has it’s own autumn feel to it, while the remake captures more of the colorful beauty that is Door County in autumn.

Introducing the 52 to Two Project
Announcing the start of my latest project: 52 weekly photo shoots before our son’s second birthday.
Still carrying the momentum of close to 20 photos shoots with our son in the past six months, and looking for a follow-up to my recently completed Daily Baby Project, it’s time to announce the latest project that will be keeping me behind the camera and regular intervals for the next twelve months.
52 Weeks
With the Daily Baby Project capturing the our son’s first year, this new project will be capturing his second trip around the sun. The main project focus here is – documenting my growth as portrait photographer as our son continues to grow up right before our eyes.
So, by his second birthday, we can once again look back and all the memories and keepsake images of time going by way too fast, and I’ll have a set of 52 images that help quantify just how far along I’ve come behind the camera in one year’s time.
Project Details
I’ve recently added the official project page for the 52 to Two project in the Projects section of the website, so you can click over there to learn even more about my plans for this.
For now – seeing that the first 3 weeks of the project are already finished – you can follow along with the project images in the 52 to Two gallery.

As the year progresses and the photo shoots start to add up, I will likely find a better way to feature all the photos, but for now, this is the place to check for updates each week. I’ll also be sharing a photo from each weekly shoot here at the blog, so be sure to check the “Stay Updated” options at the top of the right sidebar here to make sure you don’t miss out.
And like everything else, if you have feedback or suggestions for this project or as ideas as the weeks go by, please share them in the comments section, on my Facebook Page, or anywhere else you find me.
Thanks,
– Kris
Now Sharing on 500px
Striving to share my very best work in my new 500px portfolio.
It’s hard to believe that I started my first Flickr account almost 5 years ago, and even to this day I’ve been a big fan of what they provide – especially from a developer API.
But while I’m not giving up on Flickr, I’ve decided to also join the growing movement that is headed towards 500px.com.
So now, you can view my very best works to date on my new 500px portfolio page at http://krisnelsonphoto.500px.com

I’m only starting with a few select photos at the moment, and I imagine I’ll just be posting about a dozen or so from my existing works so far. The emphasis for me, really, is going to be posting the best new work I put together starting with the year ahead.
The other part about 500px that has me pretty excited to have joined is how easy it is to browse through so many amazing photographs and instantly be inspired in more ways than I could possible shoot in a year. Add to that the slick 500px iPad App and I can see myself quickly losing track of time finding other great photographers to follow and filling up my idea list.
Are you on 500px?
Do you already have a 500px account? Look me up at http://500px.com/KrisNelsonPhoto if you wanted to follow along, or leave your 500px link in the comments so I can check out your work.
